Hi, there!

Today I will share with you what are the benefits of seaweed soap.

You are correct to say, “what the heck is seaweed soap“?!

Let’s make it this way. What is your primary association when you hear the word “seaweed”? Is it mainly connected with something like “a strange creature living in the oceans”?

At least, this was my case until I realized how precious seaweed is for the sea ecosystem and us human beings.
If this is your case, read below to learn more about seaweed and how seaweed soap can support our bodies to be clean and healthy.

Let’s start!

What is seaweed?

Seaweed is a cumulative word for different marine plants. They are versatile. Concerning size, they could be small (like phytoplankton), middle-sized or enormous. They could be red, green or brown.

Apart from growing wild in the oceans, they can be cultivated on farms. Countries like the Philippines and Indonesia are among the most significant seaweed producers.Benefits of seaweed

We could trace the seaweed origin some 3.5 billion years ago! They are responsible for 90% of the oxygen on the Earth and are very clean plants as their position is at the beginning of the food chain!

On average, in 1 kg seaweed, we find the same amount of minerals as in 100 000 litres (26 400   gallons) of seawater!

What unites all seaweed species is that they are instrumental and provide many benefits to the marine ecosystem. People have found different ways to utilize it, as well.

Some uses of seaweed

  • It can be used as food. Primarily people from Asia and Africa have included the plant in their menu, but not only as its popularity grows. By the way, seafood is included in the food diet of astronauts.

Moreover, some scientists consider that seaweed will be among the foods that will help humankind eliminate starvation in the future.

  • It can be used as a herb. Seaweed is rich in minerals, fibre, and vitamins. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects. It can relieve skin burns and wounds.
  • It can be used as a cosmetic ingredient, enriching creams, shampoos, soaps, etc. For example, a straightforward natural soap recipe includes water, ground seaweed powder, coconut oil, caustic soda and essential oils.

Now let’s dive deep and see what seaweed properties can do for us.

Why should we use seaweed?

Rich in so many components!

Seaweed is among the most influential and rich in valuable substances and ingredients. It contains a protein complex, 95% absorbed by the human body. In 10 gr (0.4 oz) seaweeds, we find the same amount of proteins as in 1 kg (35 oz) veal!

In seaweeds, we can find all essential amino acids, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, folic acid, vitamins, beta carotin, enzymes, minerals, magnesium, copper, and iron. That is why they are so preferred in the natural cosmetics and beauty industries.

GLA rich

Spirulina seaweed is the second-best (after breast milk) gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) source. That is why it is called the planet’s breast milk! GLA is an essential omega-6 fatty acid which supports our body’s immune system. It successfully neutralizes free radicals.

It is like a medicineSeaweed is rich in minerals

Spirulina seaweed is considered to help with diabetes, hypoglycemia, stress, anaemia, hepatitis and gastric ulcer.

Purifies blood

Seaweeds can remove toxins from the blood.

There is a controlled experiment with the following result: Spirulina extract (250 mg) plus zinc (2 mg) twice daily for 16 weeks may help treat chronic arsenic poisoning with melanosis and keratosis!

It has an anti-ageing effect

Seaweeds can reduce fats, balance the metabolism and restore the water balance. They improve and maintain skin moisture.

Other seaweeds benefit is connected with anti-ageing effect related to our skin. For example, polysaccharides in red seaweed help with skin hydration. Potassium, iron, and magnesium support cells’ renewal and make skin soft and smooth.

Stimulates skin elasticity

Brown seaweed stimulates collagen and elastin. The latter helps skin return to its original position when poked or pinched. Other seaweeds generate hyaluronic acid, which is another condition for elastic skin!

It has an anti-acne effect

Last but not least – a Scottish team of scientists proved that seaweeds could protect skin against bacteria, spots and wrinkles. They can remove dead cells and help to unblock the pores.

Thus they act as a natural face exfoliant. They help against cellulite, purifying the lymphatic system and eliminating uric acid. The overall result? Treating acne!
