What is neroli oil?

When speaking of neroli essential oil, it is a bit complicated, so I will make it simple for you. In fact, neroli oil is derived from a bitter orange tree (Citrus Aurantium).

Bitter orange is a somehow controversial fruit. It is famous as a dietary supplement. From the other side, it has been linked to a range of harmful side effects including strokes and heart attacks.

What matters for you is not the fruit, but the blossom. And here it goes even more intriguing:)What is neroli oil? Neroli oil benefits and uses

From the flower of the bitter orange tree, one can derive two different essential oils – neroli oil and orange blossom oil. They are similar but still have their scent nuances.

The main difference comes from the extraction process.

Neroli oil is steam-distilled, while orange blossom oil is extracted differently.

To have the picture complete, I will add two more “players in the game.” From the peal of the bitter orange fruit, one can extract bitter orange essential oil. Leaves are distilled to get Petitgrain essential oil.

OK, I hope now we have clarity on what exactly neroli oil is:)

Just for the record, neroli oil includes components, like linalool, linalyl acetate, nerolidol, E-farnesol, α-terpineol, limonen.

An interesting fact is that linalool is used as a scent in many hygiene products and cleaning agents including soaps, detergents, shampoos, lotions.

You might wonder where the name “neroli” comes? No secret here:) We have to go back to the end of the 17th century when the princess of the Italian region Nerola introduced the extract from a bitter orange tree as a scent.

And voila – the name neroli “appeared” on the essential oils’ map!
